Kalimantan's Ethnic Groups
Each places in Indonesia is filled with highly diverse range of traditions and cultures.
Kalimantan is the second largest island in Indonesia, which gives it huge range of diversity.
1. Dayak Tribe
Dayak is considered to be the original tribe of Kalimantan. They are spread across West, South, North, Central, and East Kalimantan.
Having 400+ sub-tribe, Dayak tribe has so many uniqueness and traditions that not many people have discovered yet.
They are known with one of their traditions called, Telingaan Aruu, a tradition that elongates their earlobe mostly done by the female.

2. Banjar Tribe
Banjar tribe or Suku Banjar is one of the large ethnic groups in Kalimantan. Spread mostly across Central, South, and East Kalimantan.
One of the traditions that has been passed down by this tribe is floating market, where they sell vegetables, fruit, fish, and basic necessities.

3. Kutai Tribe
They originally lived in coastal areas and along riverbanks. They are considered to have kinship within the Dayak ethnic group cluster.

4. Hakka Tribe
The Hakka ethnic group originates from China and resides in the Singkawang region of West Kalimantan. Singkawang City is renowned as one of the largest Chinatown areas in Indonesia with its famous celebrations during the Lantern Festival (known as: Chap-go-me)


5. Tidung Tribe
The Tidung ethnic group inhabits the North Kalimantan region. The language they use is the Tarakan dialect, a city in the North Kalimantan province. The Tidung language family includes Kalabakan, Bulungan, Murut Sembakung, and Murut Serudung languages. They are known to have a Malay-influenced culture.

Other than Kalimantan’s ethnic groups, many other ethnic groups from around Indonesia occupied Kalimantan, such as the Bugis tribe from South Sulawesi, Javanese tribe from Java, Madura tribe from Madura Island, and many more.
