Central Kalimantan
Unlike other provinces, Central Kalimantan is the home of natural beauty with overflowing green forests and ideal place for all nature-loving people alike. One of the main must-visit attractions in the province is Tanjung Puting National Park where visitors are able to enjoy a trip down the Sekonyer River in the traditional boat called Klotok to get a closer look at the wildlife’s natural habitat, such as the orangutans, exotic birds and proboscis monkeys. Tumbang Manggu Village is another great option to consider when visiting central Kalimantan for its traditional houses, dances and handicrafts of the Dayaks. For a combination of both rich Dayak culture and spirital value, and calming scenery, Bukit Batu area in Palangka Raya is a great place to go to.
Recommended dishes:
Juhu Umbut Rattan (Rattan Shoot Curry)
It is a traditional Dayak cuisine that uses young rattan as the basic ingredient. Since rattan is easily accessible, it’s no surprise that the tribe uses it in a lot of their food. However, Umbut Rattan can only be served as a vegetable side-dish. It has a chewy texture and a unique taste that deserves the spotlight for once!
Kue Gegatas
Kue Getas (shortened version) is one of the most-loved traditional snacks in central Kalimantan. It is made of glutinous rice and topped with a layer of sugar that adds to the sweet taste of the snack. It is believed to be the perfect combination to a cup of hot coffee.
Kalumpe (Pounded Cassava Leaves)
Kalumpe, or also known as Karuang depending on the region, is another one of staple Dayak dishes that is made from cassava leaves. It is usually served with a sprinkle of peanut, spicy shrimp paste and salted Lais fish.
